From my original oil painting:

"Should three thunderstorms kiss three full moons in succession, and should the clouds tear themselves apart after the third, baring the moon's bone-white face to the sleeping stones below, the Golden-feathered ones may come. They flutter between the graves with deliberate grace, their jaws worrying at the moss that grows fat on forgotten names. No photograph has ever caught them—the camera sees only darkness where they feed—and those who seek them find nothing but rain-slick marble and their own reflections in standing water. Yet one appeared to me, as rare gifts sometimes do. I drew it quickly, my hand cramping around the pencil, while it studied me with that terrible, innocent curiosity known only to things that have no fear of death. Its jaws worked steadily, grinding green pulp between sharp teeth, cheeks bulging with the softness of decay. It did not fly away. It simply waited, as though I were the one being observed, the one being committed to memory in some book I would never read."
